VINYLCOLOGY 101
Chopsy-Into_The_Cosmos-2011-Architeq
“INTO THE COSMOS” is ChopsyAnimations first foray into the world of music videos, a tie-in with music maker Architeq from Tirk Records.
Originally it was conceived as a short film by Chopsy (director Darren Robbie), with a simple premise: “what happens to all the old vinyl people used to play? From out of attics, rubbish bins & forgotten shelving, the records are summoned to an old warehouse by a mysterious ‘collector’.”
Using a combination of stop-frame, pixilation, live-action & time lapse animation, it was shot in a variety of locations around Bristol & was created by shooting entirely in camera whenever possible (at other times multiple passes were combined). By shooting each frame within a specific timescale for the external shots, we see vinyl records interacting with the ever changing natural light & weather (dry or wet, sunny or cloudy) – if you look closely you can even see puddles drying out in a couple of shots.
The short film was created on & off over a period of 7 months by a bunch of friends between paid work, a real labour of love (it had no budget to speak of). It was shot in late winter earlier this year with the spring & summer being used to do all the post (mainly rig removal). All the records you see were cut before shooting, with new centre labels stuck onto them to create the desired visual effect of them spinning & bouncing through the ground, they were then animated on location using weighted rigs.
Architeq added the music & sound effects after filming finished & the first edit was completed. Rigs were removed, different passes combined & shadows cleaned up in AfterEffects. Motion capture on location was achieved by using Dragon software on a laptop, which was in turn powered by a portable caravan battery. Cameras used were the Canon Eos 5 & 7.

Here's another wonderful piece of originality. I should've posted this last week with the other vintage tapes. This was one of those "I let my tape rock, till my tape popped" mixtape's. Everyone has heard it one time or another at a friend's house, b-ball court, or house party. I'm about to go an buy that new Ipod boombox from TDK and head down to the basketball courts with knee sox, a bicycling cap with flipped up brim and the tongues of my kicks hanging out. Let's see how many people give me dirty looks for trying to fit in with the style right now.

The first thing your saying is ...damn, I thought this guy burned all his notebooks. Guess what, you can work on songs for the next 2 years and still not have as many unreleased tracks as I am sitting on. This is just one that I thought would be good to drop considering today was Travers day. RIP Yusef Afloat.

These get better every year. If you want yours head over to Greg Montgomery's website and purchase a singed or unsigned version. From what I am told is that Greg lives/or lived in a brownstone somewhere down by Madison Ave. Who knows if that is true. What i do know is that he is a Capital Region native and a great artist.
Skillz.

I was debating on what to post for this week, so i figured I'd lace you with some rare tapes that were in my collection. If you don't already have these they are great to add to any cassette collection. There's a ton of rare and still to this day unreleased joints on these. If you are younger cat, take a listen to what a real "golden era" mixtape sounds like. Here's some more....

GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE
Necro-Sorcerer_of_Deaths_Construction-2011-UGHH
Love him or hate him, Necro is still one of the most dominant forces in underground hip hop today. It's hard to believe that it's approaching the 10 year anniversary of "Gory Days". I remember getting that as a stocking stuffer from my girl who is now my wife. When your girl buys you anything Necro, you better wife her. That instrumental album is still a favorite of mine and the artwork to this day cannot be touched. Salute the original goon of hip hop buy hitting his store and copping something fresh. Follow him on twitter as well for special sales on his merchandise.
Apathy-Check_to_Check-2011-DG
Ever since back when he was with Demigodz, Apathy has always had the drive to improve his music and his fanbase. 10 years later his music is more popular than ever and I'm glad to see that the tables are turning toward the underground this year. What is also great is that he isn't afraid to take chances on adding new producers to the line up.
Apathy's new album is fire as well... cop it and be amazed. Click the banner.
I bought mine on vinyl, how bout you?
later hater.
FURS AND GATORWALLYS
Wais_P-Chewbacca-(Han_Solo)_feat._Sean_P._and-Guilty_Simpson-LIVE-2011-UC
This shit is illy.
Wais_P.-Random_Pimp-2011-UC
This disc came out a few weeks ago, but I figured I'd post it with the live video. Wais P. is on the fast track gaining respect from the underground as well as many well known emcees.
DOWNLOAD "Random Pimp"
Ghostface_Killah-The_Fisherman-2011-UC
Here's a just released Ghostface LP. Nah, don't get excited...it's just a bunch of classic ghost and wu freestyles all on one compilation. I still remember the first time I ever heard that Stretch and Bobbito freestyle over the "i got cha opin" beat. I was 17, finishing up work at Hoffman car wash and had my walkman rolling during closing. It was the first joint on a DJ Ekim tape I had popped in after grabbing it from my homie's crib. Glad I snagged that tape.
Download "The Fisherman"
01 00:50 Intro
02 02:11 Song Cry
03 02:57 Hot Shit
04 02:52 Thinking
05 07:16 Wu-Tang Bang Feat Method Man
06 03:37 Hard Not To Show It
07 02:43 Six Foot Feat Method Man
08 02:15 Crew Deep Down
09 04:26 The Old Wu Shit
10 02:10 Park Hill
11 03:52 Roll Call Feat Wu Tang Clan
12 05:45 Say That Shit
...and support by purchasing a copy if you like it.
We laughing all the way to the Super 8.

The Vinylcologist comes out of nowhere with this tribute to Mayer Hawthorne (Stonesthrow) made strictly from his Strange Arrangment album. After hearing it again a few years later Vinyl decided to make a beat out of every song while paying tribute to the soul superstar. He wanted to make sure that this was done unlike any other tribute to Mayer. He used the full length LP (not the instrumental album) and added samples and cuts from other well known records that happened to be out already laying around his studio. The result was a wonderful set of instrumentals that any emcee, dj, or producer could appreciate. For more info on The Vinylcologist and his beats, check out his in progress discography.

EARDROPS
Statik_Selektah_and_Slaine-State_of_Grace-2011-UC
As I promised...the new Slaine (LCN) and Statik Selektah (Showoff Records). Slaine is arguably one of the best emcees out of the Boston area and in LCN. His descriptive style of wordplay never lets me down. If you don't have it already, go and Download "A World With No Skies". This was Slaine's baby as he put it and after a slew of copyright issues and numerous delays over a period of three years you can cop the final product.
Download "State of Grace"
Biggie in the studio with Lord Finesse (Uncut)
Time is precious. Just think if Finesse was recording songs that whole time BIG would have another EP in his discography.
...and while we're on the topic of D.I.T.C.
Showbiz-Man_or_Machine_(A/V Prenuers)-2011-UC
Showbiz and DJ Premier (new beats)
If there is anything you can learn from this video is how to make your drumkits tight.
Did this ever drop? Waita minute... did I miss something. Nope.
Lord Finesse speaks on Big L.
The building you see behind Ogee (at 0:56) has been Lamont Coleman’s home for the fast 24 years he lived : 104W 139th Street. The park where this is filmed, is the place where he used to hang out and rhyme at with his friends from the Children of the Corn (COC) crew : Cam’ron, Ma$e, McGruff and Bloodshed.
Feb 15th, 1999 at 8:30 pm, Big L was shot and killed a block away from here, on 45 W 139th . In the heart of what he used to call The Danger Zone.
Lord_Finesse-Fat_For_The_90's-CDS-UC
This isn't the tape...just one song. King of the punchlines. Period.
Download "Fat for the 90's"
Ever wonder what "Booger" from Revenge of the Nerds and Joey Buttafucco are doing with their lives? #DollarGeneralBackupDancers

It's amazing to me that people either don't know his history or they are just plain napping on this guy. Since the days of Fat Pockets and Party Groove, Showbiz has been someone I've always kept tabs on over the years. I can still remember being in my bedroom with 2 brand new copies of Runaway Train. Hold Ya Head is still played on the reg off of vinyl in this dojo.

BEASTY BOY
Awar-The_Nature_Of_The_Beast-EP-2011-UC
He's the long awaited EP from my friend and fellow upstater (from time to time) AWAR. He slowly leaked out almost this whole project recently and now here it is in it's entirety. Mastered and mixed by Scott Stallone and the production line up is crazy. I talked with Awar a few years back about this and he told me he had to connect to get the beats. Take a listen and see if he got his moneys worth.
Download "Nature of the Beast"
Just a quick post for now to help promote.
Sidenote....I'm dropping that Mayer Hawthorne X Vinylcologist joint this week.
The mixing and mastering is in progress.
Be sure to check back or follow me on Twitter @UNITEDCRATES for all the exclusives.
